How to Avoid Getting Stung by Car Hire
15-04-2014
Hiring a car should be a stress free and easy process however research has shown that this is not always the case for many customers.
A survey done by Which? has revealed that half of the 8,924 members questioned ended up paying more than they were originally quoted by the hire company.
Even more worryingly, 5% of those questioned said that after returning the car, money was taken from their credit card without their knowledge to cover the additional charges.
7 Ways Rental bring you a simple guide to help you avoid getting stung by hidden extras when renting a vehicle.
Compare Prices
Shopping around for car hire is easy, but working out what's a bargain and what isn't is trickier. Different companies include different options in their base price so make sure you compare like for like.
Beware of Extra Costs
Child seats, satnavs and additional drivers can all bring extra costs, and in some cases can even add up to more than the price of the original hire car. Extra charges can also be made if you drop the vehicle off in a different location than where you picked it up.
Read the Small Print
If you’re unsure about what you are getting in your policy then it’s always a good idea to read through the fine print. Check cancellation terms, find out what to do in the event of a break down and how to handle the car being damaged by someone else.
Fuelling Costs
Fuel policies can vary between different car hire companies. The best allow you to drive the car away full and return it full. Paying the rental company for fuel can often be more expensive. Before you arrive, find out if the car will have a full tank on collection. Always make sure you leave enough time to fill up before you return the car.
Check Credit Card Statement
Watch out for any charges that have been made on your credit card without your knowledge. Some companies will charge you for damage without informing you first, and can sometimes even take large deposits from your account.
If you want to avoid any nasty surprises when hiring a rental vehicle, shop around and plan ahead before you hire.
Don’t feel rushed or intimidated, and take the time to read the terms and conditions thoroughly as you may regret it later if you don’t.
