Can I Drive a Van?
28-09-2016
Most of us at some time or other will be in a situation where we need to hire a van to move stuff that simply will not fit into our family car. When this happens you will be pleased to know that your normal UK Category B licence will cover you to rent and drive a van.
However there are some restrictions you should bear in mind:-
- Your Category B licence only entitles you to drive a vehicle – car or van, weighing up to 3,500kg and capable of carrying a maximum of 8 passengers.
- Although the driving age for a Category B licence is 17, most rental companies, for insurance reasons, won’t rent to people under the age of 21 and may charge extra for drivers under the age of 25.
Although the thought of driving a large vehicle can be a bit daunting it is not so very different from driving a car, they have power steering and the controls and driving position are similar.
However there are differences in the size of the vehicle like the height, width, length and weight you need to be aware of and take into account when driving a van.
- Move slowly at junctions, on corners and on roundabouts to accommodate the width and length of the vehicle as they need more room to turn.
- Also a heavily loaded van can tip over sideways if you take a corner too fast.
- Look out for height restrictions particularly low bridges or other road hazards like low petrol station canopies or trees with low-hanging branches.
- Take a lot of care when you are parking or backing into a space. Get someone to help you if possible.
- Be aware that rear visibility can be restricted, use wing mirrors. Particularly watch out for cyclists.
- Watch out for public warnings if you are driving on an exposed road in windy weather.
- Remember that large heavy vehicles will takes longer to stop, especially in icy or wet conditions.
- Check all cargo doors are securely closed
- Secure the load inside the van to prevent it sliding around uncontrollably – and dangerously.
